Need (noun) 1. a requirement or obligation 2. the lack of something deemed necessary. (verb) 1. to be under an obligation 2. to be necessary or required.
If you’re anything like me, just feeling “needy” drives you crazy. It means there’s something wrong, something missing, a lack of, an incompleteness that feels like the sucking of a vacuum. The openness created by this missing ‘whatever‘ creates deep feelings of vulnerability and fear. It’s uncomfortable to say the least and terrifying to tell the truth.
You’re terrified that your friends and family will be able to smell it on you and run away, screaming. Or even worse, they’ll look at you with pity. You’d like to ask for help, but how?
There’s some bad news and some good news.
It’s best to take the bad news first and get it over with, so the bad news is, I can’t tell you what you need. (Believe me, if I could, I would xoxo)
The good news is EVERYBODY has needs. Every single person on this planet needs something and will always need something. dont-be-afraid Your not alone! You can get your needs met. Although you may not get everything you want, like Mick said “But if you try sometimes, you’ll find, you get what you need.”
I’ve been working on writing a book about this analogy I wrote called “You’re the Boat”. When I say working on it, I mean when I have time in between taking care of my family, home, and self, not to mention helping put together the BB&E farmers market (which starts this Friday night). My days have been busy and full, to say the least.
Take a look at the drawing to the right. You can see that the window on the left shows provisions, the window in the middle shows fun and the window on the right shows recovery. All three of these are directly over the Keel, which represents responsibilities.
Our responsibilities are heavy, in order to keep our ‘boat’ upright and stable.
The three different types of needs; provisions, fun and recovery help to balance out our responsibilities. We don’t just need the right ‘stuff’ to feel fulfilled. We need light-hearted joy, and camaraderie to feel good and happy. We also need plenty of pure rest and relaxation in order to be able to fully recover and get back to being ourselves.
Too much of anything throws the whole system out of whack.
The key is to remember……. it’s all about balance.
We’re never going to have everything we need. As living, breathing human beings, we’re constantly using up what we have and then need to replenish ourselves.
Look at what your current need could be. Start with the basics like food, water and shelter, and then gently continue on from there. Focus on taking care of yourself and leave the guilt out of it. (Guilt and shame have NEVER helped anyone feel better or get stronger, so let it go). Get a drink of water, eat a healthy meal and take some exercise. Call a trusted friend or relative and savor their love and acceptance. Your family and friends want a happy, healthy YOU. Don’t deny them that.
Are your responsibilities making you feel resentful and sucked dry?
Then make some time to GO OUT AND PLAY!!! Cultivate your fun-lovingness and creativity! Laugh, giggle, smile and feel the wind come back into your sails! Joy clears out your heart and lightens up your mind and it makes you more attractive too! Find someone you love and bring them along with you because fun shared is fun doubled!
Make your life worth living!
Once you’ve had your fill of fun,and your responsibilities are caught up, give yourself plenty of time to just rest. Let go of feeling like you have to do anything more and just make room for God (the Universe, the Divine, Allah, the Source, the Force whatever) to step in and do what needs to be done. Your Captain wants to help, but you need to be willing to receive it.
As I write this post, my friendly blog reader, I can see how I need to bring more FUN into my life. I’ve been letting my responsibilities take up too much of my life! I need to break out my burlap and beads art again, or maybe I’ll make a new magic wand. It’ll do me good and I know I’ll come back refreshed and ready to ROCK!!
