I’ve been taking Tootsie for her own walk just up to the island and back. It’s only a short walk compared to our trek around the lake and and she really seems to be enjoying the slower pace. I mean really enjoying it. So much so that I’m having a hard time finding patience to let her stop, sniff and pee what feels like every 12 feet. Of course I love her and want her to savor her time outside, especially since she’s been patiently waiting all day for me to come home from my adventures. So I struggle with the stop and go pace she insists on taking. Although I can feel the impatience, like a tidal wave pushing me from the inside, I fight it as best I can.
Although I feel like I need to get up and cruise, (after 14 years, it’s natural but also something of a habit) I’ve started to realize that going too fast makes me miss my surroundings. Especially now with the autumn leaves giving their final performance, rushing through this time of year would be a tragic mistake. Mother Nature is offering me (us) this gorgeous gift of time to stop and really appreciate the view. Now, in the autumn of the year (as well as the autumn of my dog’s days), I get a chance to really, truly savor this gift of my dog and my life. (When I count my blessings, Tootsie is always near the top of my list.)
Although walking slowly has not been my way in the past, I’m finally starting to understand that pushing faster won’t fulfill me but savoring my life and serving my Crew to the best of my ability will. As frustrating as it can feel sometimes, my slow walk with Tootsie is a very valuable lesson that will enable me to more fully appreciate my time here. It’s a gift that will serve me and the people and creatures I love for the rest of my days.
I accept this gift with gratitude.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Mother Nature, Universe, Divine, God, Allah, Source, Force, the Big Guy in the Sky.
